What major should i choose if i want to research cures for diseases?

okay so i really want to research cures for diseases like cancer and stuff... what major is that? one person told me that was a biomedical engineer but when i looked that up i found they did stuff like make prostetic limbs/organs, machines like mri's, and stuff like that and thats not really what i want. please tell me if this major is not what i want or is what i want lol or if its too specific to find a job and stuff. thanks so much
