Drum Kit Help For A Beginner?

I just got a drum kit for my birthday a week ago, and it's fun as hell. My only problem is that I can't seem to be able to play a different beat on the bass drum then on anything else. All my foot is good for at this point is keeping time. I've played a single snare for concert/marching season since 5th grade so I have experience drumming. My older brother is a drummer as well, and he says that limb independance will come over time, and I just need to keep working at it. It's not that I don't believe him, but I was wondering if anyone knew any techniques that I could practice to speed up the process.
